Postage Stamp 1:100 North American P-51D 62 Mustang "Bunny" (Tuskegee Airmen Red Tail) PS5342-11
The P-51D Mustang was built as a long-range fighter and bomber, and was the best fighter aircraft of late WWII, seeing action in other engagements as well. At the time, no other combat plane could go as far, fly as high, or go as fast as the P-51D. In 1944 the Mustang was recognized as the best single seat long-range escort fighter. Over 15,000 P-51s were produced. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American aviators in the United States armed forces who fought during World War II. This P-51D Mustang sporting the defining prominent Red Tail along with "Bunny" pin-up nose art, was flown by Tuskegee Airman Lieutenant Colonel Bob Friend on numerous missions while stationed in Europe during World War II, has been restored and is now on permanent display at the Palm Springs Air Museum in California.
